Death at Wallens Ridge prison ruled a homicide

A death reported by the Department of Corrections at Wallens Ridge State Prison in Big Stone Gap is being investigated as a homicide.

The agency said Gregory Wayne Pierce, 47, died from injuries sustained in an attack from another inmate while inside his cell.

Pierce was serving multiple life sentences for sexual assaults including rape. The suspect has not been named but corrections officials said he was in prison for life for a murder conviction.
