Sullivan County mourns loss of Bluff City Mayor Irene Wells

Bluff City, Tennessee Mayor Irene Wells has died after being hospitalized over the weekend.

Sullivan County Mayor Richard Venable delivered the news and said he had known Irene and the Wells family for many decades and asked county residents to remember the family in the coming days.

Wells had a tumultuous political career in Bluff City including filing a complaint against her fellow commissioners in 2011 for racial and gender discrimination that garnered her the support of the Tennessee NAACP.

The town’s charter indicates the Vice Mayor will now take the vacated seat which will now be filled by Ray Arrington.
