Data in Doubt: Bristol Virginia challenges recent landfill report

A statement from the city of Bristol Virginia says numbers in a just-released report on air quality conditions do not accurately reflect the current level of emissions emanating from the permanently closed landfill.

The comments place doubt on the data generated in the report by the Department of Health and Human Services due to the readings coming from four year old stats concerning noxious odors emitted from the old quarry location due to a rise in concealed waste temperature. The federal report had four conclusions including benzene exposure to the west and southwest of the landfill for more than a year could cause non-cancer health problems including an increased risk of leukemia.

Governor Youngkin has approved more than $60 million for landfill remediation in Bristol.
