Erwin Police Chief on administrative leave after failed breath alcohol test

Erwin Police Chief Regan Tilson has been on paid administrative leave since June 30, when he tested positive on a random breath alcohol test, a result Tilson is contesting. The Town of Erwin has hired an attorney to conduct an independent investigation and to make a recommendation for disciplinary action. Officers are chosen randomly and must submit to the test per the Town of Erwin Personnel Policy. The test was not administered during a traffic stop or during the operation of a vehicle. Ballad Health administers the tests on behalf of the town. Chief Tilson is contesting the test and will remain on administrative leave until the investigation has been completed.
