Former UVA Wise player and newly-hired teacher killed in SUV crash

An East Tennessee teacher killed in a car crash near Harrogate will be laid to rest this weekend.

Published family information said ceremonies for 22-year-old Katlin Shay Burger, a special education instructor at Cumberland Gap High School, will be held in Greene County.

Burger was traveling on Forge Ridge Road when her SUV left the highway, overturned, then struck a tree, according to a preliminary crash report.

Burger graduated from the University of Virginia’s College at Wise earlier this year where she was a starter for the school’s women’s basketball team and scored more than 1,000 points over her four years, according to data from UVA Wise’s official web pages.
