New Peoples Bank says hacker compromised operating systems
New Peoples Bank confirmed to the public that an interruption in system operations on June 15th was a result of an unauthorized person who gained access to the network. The bank says they enlisted the help of a third-party cybersecurity firm that launched an investigation into the incident. A notice on the bank’s website says the investigation determined an individual did gain access to the company’s systems, although security measures were in place to prevent that.
They go on to say customers’ and employees’ private information such as social security numbers, drivers license numbers, and bank account information may have been accessed or acquired during the incident. To compensate, New Peoples Bank is offering all customers a one-year membership with an identity protection service, to detect any possible misuse of information. “The investigation determined that an unauthorized person gained access to our systems on June 9, 2022. Although we had protocols and security technology in place to try to help prevent this access, the unauthorized person was able to evade many of these defenses. Our investigation determined that some of your information may have been accessed or acquired by the unauthorized person, including your Social Security number, your driver’s license number, your financial account information, or your electronic signature.
