State Police report pedestrian fatality

A preliminary investigation by State Police says a driver in Wythe County could not avoid striking a pedestrian on Route 11.

Worley J. Stafford, 66, of Rural Retreat died from his injuries at the scene. There were no sidewalks or shoulders along the highway and Worley was pushing a grocery cart at the time of impact.

The driver of the vehicle suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
