VA primary elections moved to August 4
Virginia primary elections for all offices on the 2026 November general election ballot have been moved to August 4. State officials confirmed there will be no primary elections held on the previously scheduled date of June 16. The primary date change was established by the General Assembly in House Bill 29, which was signed into law on February 20. This legislative change is specific only to the 2026 election year and is not contingent on the passage of a referendum scheduled for April 21. Early in-person voting is scheduled to begin on June 19. General registrar offices that are closed for the statewide Juneteenth holiday will start early in-person voting on June 18. Requested absentee ballots will be mailed no later than June 19, including those for registered military and overseas voters. The deadline to register to vote and cast a regular ballot is July 24.
