Wise County prosecutor explains purpose of sealing files in Travis Turner case
Wise County Commonwealth’s Attorney Brett Hall said there were multiple reasons for his recommendation to seal documents related to the Travis Turner child porn case that were approved by a Circuit Court judge.
Those include protecting the identity and privacy of the alleged victim, to ensure a fair trial once Turner is arrested and using exemptions governed under Virginia code. Hall’s office has fielded multiple requests from media outlets around the US for public documents concerning the case. Hall noted some of those papers are usually available through a Freedom of Information Act submission but state prosecutors also have discretion to withhold that information to preserve the investigation.
Turner, the former teacher and Union High coach, remains a fugitive being sought by the Virginia State Police.
