UPDATE: Carter County Landfill fire in demolition drop off “could burn for days”
Multiple local volunteer fire departments responded to a fire at the Carter County Landfill Thursday morning. Carter County Government/EMA officials say the Watauga Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the landfill just before 5 a.m. A large fire was seen near the back portion of the demolition drop-off at the landfill. A mutual aid call was made to all Carter County fire departments. The Tennessee Forestry Department and the Tennessee Department of Conservation were also notified. No injuries have been reported and officials say the fire could burn for days. In total, nine departments responded to the fire, including two from Sullivan County. The landfill will be closed until further notice for all demolition debris, but household garbage can still be dropped off. An investigation is already underway.
