Two separate accidents reported at BWXT sites
BWXT says it is reviewing two separate incidents that happened Tuesday at its Jonesborough site and Nuclear Fuel Services in Erwin, leaving one employee injured. An employee at the BWXT Jonesborough site was using a metal bar when an “industrial accident” occurred, resulting in the bar hitting the worker and causing him to fall. The employee was taken to Johnson City Medical Center, to receive care. In a separate incident, an employee at Nuclear Fuel Services discovered smoldering cleaning materials and used a fire extinguisher to douse the material. No injuries reported and emergency responders were called to the site just as a precaution. The incidents come as BWXT plans to expand its Jonesborough plant to produce high-purity depleted uranium. A BWXT request to rezone part of its property is pending before the Washington County Commission.
