Abingdon Town Council shelves proposed noise ordinance after hearing concerns
The Abingdon Town Council will no longer pursue a proposed noise ordinance to limit sound levels after much feedback from the community. The proposed ordinance would have established a measurable sound limit of 65 decibels after 6 p.m. for businesses. Opponents of the ordinance said it would damage small businesses and undermine the vibrant local music scene. On Friday, Abingdon Town Manager Mike Cochran said in a media release that the town council was withdrawing the ordinance for consideration after listening to members of the community. The statement said that “Council recognizes its responsibility to residents who have concerns about noise, while also supporting the many local businesses and restaurants that contribute to our community’s vitality.” The town will continue to operate under its existing ordinance and continue to monitor it. The current ordinance begins at 11 p.m.
