End of shift: Norton’s police chief concludes 30-year career
Norton Chief of Police James Lane radioed-in to Central Dispatch for the city and Wise County, declaring himself off duty for the final shift of his career.
“…Thank you for your steady leadership, your dedication and the example you set for us all,” said the dispatcher as Lane sat in his patrol cruiser.
It concluded a 30-year career for Lane who announced his intention to retire in March.
His final years in office were challenging due to wounds he received while he faced a shoplifter in a store parking lot. As he stepped out of his SUV, Lane was hit five times with bullets striking him in both arms and pelvis while another officer came in and wounded the suspect.
The man responsible for Lane’s injuries was convicted and was given two life sentences plus 11 years for the attempted murder of the chief.
Lane remained on the job as he recovered from his injuries. He received a hero’s welcome when he returned to Norton after his initial hospital stay.
