Homeowners in Carter County concerned after receiving property reassessments
Homeowners in Carter County have received their 2026 property tax reassessments and many residents are concerned. County officials say by state law, the tax rate has to come down, so the actual tax rate for the county will adjusted down by the state. They also note that assessments were based on sales that went through the Register of Deeds Office in 2025, which were then put through a sales analysis using new rates from the state. Carter County Property Assessor Shane Simerly says anybody can call or come in, and someone in the office will go over your property record card and discuss your new appraisal to make sure everything’s correct. Simerly said they have a limited number of workers in the office and will continue to answer as many calls as possible, but it may be easier for residents to get answers more quickly in person.
