Man jumps 35 feet down to Carter County’s Twisting Falls, does not surface

Emergency and law enforcement workers put in several hours of recovery work after a visitor to a popular Carter County waterfall reportedly drowned on Saturday.

An early report from the Sheriff’s Office said officers responded after a call for help in the Elk Mills area was made after eyewitnesses said a 35-year-old man jumped from Twisting Falls, also known as Compression Falls, into the waters located 35 feet below.

Preliminary details indicate the victim became caught in the falls’ undertow, keeping him below the water until he was pulled out by someone in his group. Resuscitation efforts by CPR were unsuccessful and the man was pronounced dead on the scene. The investigation into the incident continues. The name of the victim has not been released.
