Trial underway for man accused of shooting Johnson County deputy
Trial begins Tuesday, for Joey Ponce, the man accused of shooting a Johnson County sheriff’s deputy during a violent pursuit. A jury was seated Monday following Ponce’s court appearance. Authorities say the incident began last April with an armed robbery in North Carolina, sparking a high-speed chase that crossed state lines at speeds topping 100 miles per hour. According to the sheriff, Ponce jumped from his moving vehicle in a business parking lot and opened fire on responding officers, hitting one deputy in the leg. Ponce faces multiple charges, including attempted first-degree murder. Prosecutors have officially filed notice that they are seeking a sentence of life without parole.
