Air quality checks being made Church Hill Elementary

Hawkins County School District Director Matt Hixson says air quality checks will be conducted at Church Hill Elementary for an off-site issue that caused 7 people to be transported to Kingsport hospitals for nausea symptoms.

The report said numerous gas smell concerns were reported throughout the Deerfield area to the Church Hill / Mt Carmel line.

“School and district personnel did exactly what they were supposed to in the event of a gas leak or poor air quality outside a school structure. They brought everyone inside and stopped the outside airflow while the problem was investigated,” said Hixson’s statement on social media.

“Our nursing supervisor and additional support were brought into the school. Three air quality checks performed (Thursday) via the gas company, fire department professionals, and district personnel, have all come back clean, with no concerns.”

Classes were cancelled for Friday, and more testing will be conducted on Monday.
