Bill to allow civil action against out of state anti abortion drug suppliers advances in TN
The Tennessee House of Representatives passed legislation that would allow civil action against out-of-state suppliers who send abortion-inducing drugs into Tennessee. House Bill 5, would create a legal pathway for certain family members to sue if they can show the drugs caused the death of a fetus, and allows for statutory damages of at least $1 million. The measure also makes it a Class E felony to knowingly mail abortion-inducing drugs to someone in Tennessee. Opponents of similar measures in other states have raised concerns about access to reproductive health care and potential legal challenges involving interstate commerce and enforcement. The bill moves to the Tennessee Senate for further consideration.
