Cooling centers open around the Tri Cities with heat index 100+
With heat indexes in the Tri Cities forecast to be over 100 degrees, some churches and non-profits are serving as cooling shelters. In Johnson City, First Presbyterian Church on South Boone Street is providing shelter and snacks for the homeless today beginning at 2 p-m and lasting until 6 p.m. The Salvation Army at 505 Dale Street in Kingsport, is handing out bottled water during their normal hours and providing a cooling center from noon until 6 p.m. on days of extreme heat.
