Email from parent of Union High student states accusations following Turner investigation
The parent of a Union High School student alleges a culture exists in Wise County of sweeping problems under the rug with teachers and adults in advisory roles.
The allegation came in an email sent to School Board chair Larry Greear and a member of the Virginia House of Delegates that was obtained by the Daily Mail publication.
The parents claims reports of Travis Turner’s inappropriate relationship with a student were made known to Union administrators but were not submitted within the 24 hour timeframe as required in Virginia law.
A statement from Wise County Public Schools was published on social media to represent their viewpoints during the Turner investigation.
“Wise County Public Schools is aware of the concerns that have been raised publicly. The division takes all matters involving student safety seriously and follows all required reporting laws, legal obligations, and established procedures.
“Certain matters, including personnel issues and ongoing law-enforcement activity, are confidential under Virginia law. As a result, the division is unable to provide additional details or comment further at this time.
The School Board conducts its business in accordance with Virginia’s open-meeting laws. When closed sessions are held, they are limited to purposes permitted by law, and no final action is taken without being reported and voted on in an open meeting.”
Turner had left his Appalachia home on November 20th prior to State Police officers arriving at the house with questions about the case. He was criminally charged days later, accused of possessing child porn and soliciting sex on a computer. Files related to Turner’s case were ordered sealed by a judge this week.
