Great Smoky Mountains Park visitors injured by elk as rut season begins

A report from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park says several visitors have been injured by aggressive elk that are in the midst of their rut or mating season.

One guest was issued a fine last week for violating park regulations and had their arm punctured by an elk’s antlers when they got too close to the animal.

The park statement says it is the visitor’s responsibility to maintain the regulated distance between a person and elk, published as 75 feet.

Certain locations within the park are closed until the end of the elk rut and rangers recommend staying in your vehicle and pulling off the roadway to observe wildlife.

Tips for responsible elk viewing from GSMNP officials include:

• Keep your distance: It is illegal to approach elk within 25 yards (75 feet) or at any distance that causes an animal to change its behavior because of your presence. Violations may result in fines or arrest.
• Back away if approached: If an elk approaches you, calmly increase your distance by moving away from the animal. It is your responsibility to safely and calmly maintain the legal distance.
• Respect closures and staff direction: Fields around Oconaluftee and Cataloochee are closed to all visitors during the rut. Do not stop on roadways when viewing wildlife and respect all closures. Follow instructions from park rangers and volunteers when viewing wildlife.
• Stay alert and slow down: Wildlife frequently cross roadways. Obey posted speed limits and always remain attentive when driving through the park.
• View wildlife from your vehicle safely: Use designated pull‑offs and ensure your vehicle is completely off the roadway without obstructing traffic.
