Man suffers fatal gunshot in Johnson City standoff with officers

A barricaded man in Johnson City who destroyed a law enforcement drone with gunshots was fatally shot by an officer with the Carter County Sheriff’s Office.

A TBI report says investigators will determine what happened before the man at a home on Jarrett-Buck Loop was wounded.

Initial attempts to negotiate and then use chemical agents did not force the man out of the house. Besides shooting the aerial lookout, the man fired shots at Carter County officers outside the home. His fatal wound came on the officers’ second attempt at entering the house and using the pressurized water from a fire hose to gain leverage. The man later died at an area hospital.

1st Judicial District Attorney Steve Finney will evaluate the incident involving the officer using TBI information gathered on Saturday.
