More details emerge about Weber City Police Dept. firings
About three weeks ago, Weber City Town Council voted unanimously to terminate Police Chief Donald Harding III and a lieutenant and residents have raised questions and concerns after the terminations. Vice Mayor Wendell Tipton said that he thinks “…the public should know everything that’s going on in their town.” The investigation into the officers began March 10 and Tipton says this was due to what seemed like an excessive amount of overtime for the two officers involved. The overtime was being funded through a federal grant that was dedicated to the patrol of Highway 23. When the investigation began, the town immediately notified Virginia State Police. Officials reviewed video footage that shows the officers were not patrolling the highway or in the station during hours logged on their timesheets. Tipton said because of this and other evidence the town stands by their decision despite special prosecutors saying there is no case for criminal charges. The DMV is still investigating the matter.
