Proposed TN bill could limit screen time for k-5 students
School systems across Tennessee may have to change their technology policies under a proposed bill. A bill making it’s way through the Tennessee General Assembly could limit the time students in kindergarten through 5th grade can use digital devices in schools. The bill focuses on devices provided to kindergarten through 5th-grade students by schools, such as Chromebooks, iPads, or other technology, but does not ban use altogether. Sponsors of the bill say growing research shows young students learn better when using pen and paper rather than screens. Some school officials have concerns and note that the bill takes power away from local school boards and that many teachers have integrated technology into the classroom. School leaders also say that technology can help teachers work with students who may have a different way of learning.
