River battle for a state title as Rye Cove and Rappahannock meet in Salem

In Scott County, residents in Clinchport and other stops by the Clinch River are making weekend plans for Salem as the Rye Cove War Eagles make their first-ever appearance in a VHSL Football state title game.

This year’s squad ended a 25-year drought of regional championships with a victory over Grayson County on Saturday.

The War Eagles will be facing Rappahannock out of Richmond County. The Raiders had to enlist help from volunteers with shovels and snow blowers to get their homefield ready for their weekend semifinal.

Their win two weeks ago was their first regional title in 33 years and it’s also the Raiders’ first appearance in a football state title game. They also have a major river flowing through their boundaries just like Rye Cove with the Rappahannock River in Warsaw.
