Second crash site with emergency workers on scene in Northeast Tennessee hit by 18-wheeler

The Highway Patrol has investigated two crashes in Northeast Tennessee involving emergency personnel within a 24-hour period.

The first was an Interstate 26 collision near Rock Springs that injured four emergency workers. The latest was a wreck involving equipment from the White Pine Fire Department.

A preliminary report says Engine 24 was parked in the slow lane of Interstate 81 near mile marker 5 southbound to create a safety barrier for emergency workers on the scene of a multi-vehicle crash. The engine was hit by a semi truck and trailer during the rescue, according to department officials, but all personnel were outside of and away from the machine when it was struck.

THP continues to investigate the incident and determine a cause for the crash.
