Subject of emergency custody order dead after threatening Washington County, Virginia deputies

Deputies serving a warrant at a home at Abingdon’s Driftwood Lane encountered a man with a knife who was then shot, suffering a fatal injury.

A Washington County, Virginia Sheriff’s Office report said 52-year-old Christopher Allen Smith became physical with the officers trying to serve an emergency custody order then pulled a knife on the deputies when he was fatally shot.

No officers were injured. Smith’s body has been sent to Roanoke for an autopsy.
