Two-decades old Bristol cold case concludes with guilty verdict in Sullivan County court
A family member of the late Cody Matney said justice had arrived with a Sullivan County jury finding an Alabama man guilty of murdering the Bristol man, closing the file of a cold case two decades old.
The TBI said Matney was met in the parking lot of a West State Street nightspot by Christopher James Havrilla. Matney’s truck was recovered days later, but to this date, there has been no sign of him although agents believe Havrilla dumped the victim’s body in a remote area.
Investigators said they got a break in the case in 2024 that led to Havrilla’s indictment. They also noted that other individuals in the Bristol area could have been involved in the homicide.
“We know this doesn’t bring him back, and their still have been no remains recovered, but know that this justice being brought is a major weight off of our family’s shoulders,” wrote Tracie Matney Farmer on a community Facebook page focusing on Cody’s murder case.
