VA bill introduced to eliminate 1% local sales tax on groceries
Virginia State Senator David Suetterlein from Roanoke has introduced a bill ahead of the 2026 General Assembly Session to eliminate the current 1% local tax Virginians currently pay on food and home items, such as groceries and personal hygiene products. State lawmakers previously removed the state portion of the grocery tax, which went into effect in 2023. Suetterlein said that his bill would also require the state to reimburse localities for the money they currently receive from the grocery tax. Lawmakers will consider Suetterlein’s proposal when the General Assembly convenes in January.
