Washington Co TN moves closer to property tax freeze for elderly/fixed incomes

The Washington County Commission voted earlier this week to establish a Property Tax Freeze Implementation Committee which takes another step toward adopting the state’s property tax freeze program. The program would allow qualified homeowners to lock in their property taxes to help the elderly and those on fixed incomes. The Washington County Commission voted unanimously and appointed commissioners for the committee. If adopted, qualifying homeowners must be 65 years of age or older, must own and occupy their principal residence and meet annual income limits established by the state. Once into the program, the base tax amount is frozen at the level of taxes owed in the year they first enter the program. Participants would need to file an application annually.
