Washington County TN BOE says superintendent interview process will be transparent

The Washington County, Tennessee Board of Education won’t start its search for a new superintendent until October. School board chair Annette Buchanan is emphasizing a transparent interview process amid state law changes. According to a new law which passed the latest Legislative session, legislative bodies are not required to disclose candidates’ identities or interview details with the public to honor candidates’ privacy. Regardless of the change, the Washington County BOE says it will hold public interviews with selected candidates starting in December.
Buchanan noted that a superintendent is a position that teachers and parents put trust in and approach with questions and concerns, and the public must be included during the interview process, and their opinions are taken into account, even if the board makes the final selection. Current superintendent Jerry Boyd is schedule to retire on June 30. The Board of Education will formally announce the position’s vacancy on October 9 with candidate applications due by November 6.
